She has allowed her wild antics to detract from her impressive vocal ability.
But Miley Cyrus let her voice take centre stage during a low-key performance with The Flaming Lips on Saturday.
The 21-year-old was joined onstage by Wayne Coyne and Steven Dorzd, who performed their song Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1 during her Bangerz world tour at Los Angeles' Staples Center.
Antic aside: Miley Cyrus showed off her impressive vocals during a performance with Wayne Coyne from The Flaming Lips during her concert in LA on Saturday
The concert fell on the 21st anniversary of The Flaming Lips' first ever show in Oklahoma City in 1983.
Miley first credited the band with 'inspiring her.'
'They've encouraged me to always be myself and to make music because I love it and always invent something new for my fans,' she told a screaming audience. 'As much as you guys are fans, I'm a true fan of these amazing guys right here.
Her own biggest fan: Miley wore a T-shirt emblazoned with her face and a bejeweled cap worn backwards for the performance
In her element: Miley credited the band for 'inspiring' her and encouraging her to 'be herself
Miley wore a baggy white T-shirt with her face emblazoned on the front and back, her tongue pulled out in her signature move.
She wore a bejeweled cap backwards and skintight gold leggings.
'I'm so f**king excited, you don't know what this means right now! F**k yes!' she said.
That was amazing! Miley embraced the singer following their performance
Flaming Lips frontman Wayne then stepped up onstage wearing a red suit and carrying giant balloons that spelled out the words 'F**k Yeah'.
'You guys don't understand what the f**k is happening to me right now,' said a clearly excited Miley.
'I hope I don't f**k up,' said Wayne.
'I don't think you will,' said Miley. 'We can always do it again 'cause I want to do it ten times with you.'
The duo then started to sing a cover of the band's 2002 song, and Miley showed off the voice that made her famous.
At the end of the performance, Wayne said 'I f**ked some of that up.'
Miley then went up to him and said 'Are you drunk right now?'
He admitted that he might be.
'I'm drunk too,' she added to roars from the audience.
Wayne is also a fan of Miley's, praising the star in a recent Rolling Stone interview.
'I like her aesthetic more than a Lady Gaga, who this year to me feels like, "Take me serious" and Miley’s like, "I don’t give a fuck," which to me is always a lot more fun,' he said.
'I really like that thing where the people are inside the rainbow and they walk around. I just like that sort of stuff.'
She is currently in the middle of a North American leg that will see her perform in the likes of Las Vegas, Houston, New Orleans and Miami.
Miley has caused controversy miming a sex act on a man wearing a Bill Clinton mask, groping her backing dancers and wearing a glittering leotard seemingly decorated with cannabis leaves.
Her racy routines have already made waves, with her concert promoters forced to deny her new Bangerz tour was in jeopardy due to to complaints from outraged parents.
A spokesperson for promoters Live Nation said: 'There is no truth whatsoever to any stories or rumors of venues pulling out of the Bangerz Tour.
'Miley has created a tour that's big, spectacular, entertaining and everything you would expect from Miley Cyrus.
