Arsenal are believed to be serious contenders in the race to sign William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon, reports Portuguese source O Jogo.
Representatives from the Gunners were present at Sporting Lisbon's
weekend draw against Académica along with scouts from Manchester United.
Both parties were reported to be watching the 21-year-old midfielder,
with the daily claiming it was the eighth time Manchester United had
watched him.
Their incessant scouting led many papers to believe that the Red
Devils were in the driving seat to sign Carvalho, who has a release clause of €45m in his contract.
However, Arsenal have now been credited with having a equally serious
interest in the player with Arsene Wenger keen to shore up his
defensive midfield options in the summer.
Mikel Arteta is the wrong side of 30 while Mathieu Flamini will also
be there by the end of the year. That has left Wenger looking for
long-term replacements now, with a view to bedding them in before Arteta
and Flamini fall out of their prime.
David Moyes will push Arsenal's interest all the way, however, and knows he has the backing of the Manchester United board for a heavy summer spending spree
